New Guide to the NONPROFIT FAQ The Internet Nonprofit Center offers several resources for people interested in nonprofit organizations. The Nonprofit Locator allows straightforward searching for official imformation about any nonprofit that has filed with the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status. That's over 1,000,000 organizations at the present time. A few are large and well-known. Most are small and focused on a specific community or concern. With the information from the Nonprofit Locator in hand, it should be possible to find out more about any of these organizations by doing an online search or by contacting the organization directly. Remember that effective June 8, 1999, organizations that file an annual information return (Form 990) with the IRS are required to make a copy available on request. Small fees for copying and postage are permitted under the new regulations that take effect that day. Many organization already do this, of course, but it should get even easier to find out about a charity of interest once the new rules come into force. Another major resource of the Interenet Nonprofit Center is the NONPROFIT FAQ -- a collection of hundreds of helpful discussions and reports on 110 topics of concern to leaders and organizers of nonprofits. First-time visitors to the FAQ (which stands for Frequently Asked Questions) may want some help getting started using this resource. We're grateful to Rebeca Mojica for preparing a Guide for this purpose. Check it out at http://www.nonprofits.org/npofaq/misc/guide.html We're always interested in getting new information for the FAQ, and corrections of current items where the text is out of date or otherwise off the mark. Send suggestions and corrections to editor@nonprofits.org. If you would like to volunteer to work on the content of particular part of the FAQ, that would be great. As you know, Michael Gilbert's "Nonprofit Online News" is posted regularly on this page of the Internet Nonprofit Center as soon as it is available. If you would prefer to receive these brief pointers to developments and resources by email, there are instructions following the "more news" link on how to sign up. There is also an email distribution list for people who would like to be notified every time this bulletin changes. To request that your name be added to this list, write bulletin@tess.org. The list is used only for this purpose and will be kept entirely confidential, so you need not worry about receiving a flood of unwelcome email from this source. I think the disruption from our recent service interruption is now completely resolved. If you encounter anything that seems not to have been repaired properly, please let us know. And thank you for your patience while we struggled with a web-server that suddenly stopped working properly and has required a good deal of unexpected work to bring back into service. Thank you too for your interest in the Internet Nonprofit Center. We always welcome comments, suggestions and (of course) kudos. The email address for such correspondence is editor@nonprofits.org.
