Streamlining Access to Information for Nonprofits Take a look at our new keyword index: http://www.nonprofit-info.org/npofaq/keywords/ Click on a subject of interest. You'll see a list of items ranked by the editors in order of importance for understanding the topic. They go from most central (at the top) to limited or peripherally relevance. Since most items touch on a variety of topics, this approach to finding what you need is much more reliable than the older system of listing items in "sections" under a general title and hoping visitors could choose the right section to locate needed information. (Recall that just a couple of years ago, all the information available here was contained in seventeen gigantic files and the best you could do was open one and scan through. The section indexes seemed like a big improvement when we moved to using them. The keyword index is even more useful.) Speaking of development of the site, we are also tracking "significant changes" in existing items -- and additions of new ones -- automatically. A list of recent revisions and additions is at http://www.nonprofit-info.org/npofaq/chrono/ This service has only recently been implemented; some of the entries are the result of testing, and they don't go back very far. But if you visit "Information for Nonprofits" often, you may want to bookmark that URL so you can find out easily what's been updated whenever you drop by.
Several interesting new online resources: The Applied Research and Development Institute collected information about over 900 people and organizations who offer management assistance to nonprofit organizations. The resulting database can be accessed through ARDI's website at http://www.ardi.org A lawfirm that publishes a monthly newsletter on legal issues affecting the nonprofit sector makes the headline story of each issue available through their website, and offers and archive of "ready reference" pages from past issues. The address is http://www.nonprofitissues.com/ (This would be a good site to use as an experiment with NetMind -- http://www.netmind.com -- which will notify you automatically by email when the content changes. That way you can keep up with "Nonprofit Issues" without needing to remember to check back from time to time to see if the next issue has been posted.) The United States Information Agency's recent report "A Nation of Volunteers" is available (in English) on the World-Wide Web at http://www.usia.gov/journals/itsv/0998/ijse/ijse0998.htm It, and many other items of interest, can also be found through http://www.usia.gov/journals/journals.htm , where there are links to the texts in several other languages as well. Washington state has recently posted information from its registry of organizations that solicit charitable contributions in the state at http://www.wa.gov/sec/charities.htm Several other states make listings of similar information available; when we know about them, there are links in the lists of state resources at http://www.nonprofit-info.org/npofaq/12/ ; Eric Mercer maintains a directly accessible roster of these states at http://www.interlog.com/~mercere/990_links.html
Please continue to send notes of new information for (and corrections to) these files to me at editor@nonprofit-info.org Many small corrections are made all the time; I would never know where things have fallen out of date (or were wrong in the first place) without this important help for our readers. Thanks! Lastly, if you would like to be notified by email when this "Bulletin" changes, please send your email address to bulletin@nonprofit-info.org (or, use NetMind as described above).
