Information for Nonprofits Website Improved (1/2/97)

This "Information for Nonprofits" website has been completely redesigned and restructured. These developments make it easier to find and use while maintaining its strengths as a resource for comprehensive information for nonprofit organizations in the United States. It has a new address that clearly identifies the goals of the site -- www.nonprofits.org -- and new features to make it easier to find information on the questions asked by nonprofit leaders and managers.

The redesign of the Information for Nonprofits Website has been made possible by a grant for this purpose from the Chevron Corporation to The Evergreen State Society. "Chevron's support has made it possible for us to bring new talent and energy to this popular website," said Putnam Barber, President of the Society. Barber had been maintaining the website (under its previous URL -- http://www.eskimo.com/~pbarber) as a personal volunteer project.

The site's content is largely drawn from on-line discussions of nonprofit issues on UseNet (in the newsgroup soc.org.nonprofit) and automated mailing lists such as ARNOVA-L (sponsored by the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action) and talk-amphilrev (from the American Philanthropic Review). Joining Barber as editors of the information at the site are:

Neil Berkowitz
Development Director for Everett (Washington) Performing Arts
James Caplan
President, Consultants to Nonprofit Organizations; Miami, FL.
Jayne Cravens
Internet Consultant in Austin, Texas
Ina Frank
Major Gifts Director for United Way of Ventura County (California)
Michael Gilbert
Director of The Internet Nonprofit Center
Nan Hawthorne
Director of Sound Volunteer Management in Seattle
Munn Heydorn
Consultant on Nonprofits and the Internet in the Winfield (near Chicago) area of Illinois

Each of the editors monitors online traffic in his or her area of interest and updates the resources at Information for Nonprofits continuously.

The Nonprofit Files section of the website is structured in the standard "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) format used throughout the Internet. Direct access to the answers to these questions comes through a menu of questions linked to answers drawn from online discussions. Searching the entire site for specific information is also possible using an online search "tool" that finds any word or phrase wherever it may appear in the files. In addition to his work as an editor at the site, Michael Gilbert serves as webmaster for Information for Nonprofits.

"Information for Nonprofits" is a service of The Evergreen State Society, a Washington nonprofit organization. The Society provides additional local information and resources for Washington nonprofits through the website.
